I resolved most of the issues by increasing the several Timeout settings in the WebApp Administrator. Marco had done an excellent job of providing some explanation of what they actually mean and I was able to change this with hope and confidence.

All of my 301 and 302 errors have since disappeared. We are still getting the ocassional JSON error, but nobody seems to be bugged by this.
