    Default 2021 user count error

I'm replacing my trusty old laptop which is getting long in the tooth and while installing DF 2021 on the new box have encountered a problem. If I install DF-2021 and run it with the eval license, all works. But when I install the license that I got from DAW for DF-2021, I get the following error. Is this because I've still got 2021 installed on the old laptop? If so this seems to be something new with this version since I still have DF-19.x installed on the laptop.

no, it's probably a permissions thing on the DF serial number file created by the registration program. Go find the new dfr file (c:\programdata\dataaccess worldwide\dataflex\20.0\licenses or something like that, and check the permissions on the folder. Odds are it's restricted.

What? Not every user has access to a folder that doesn't even appear in Explorer?

In my case there were two users shown, administrator and user. Administrator had full rights but user didn't and for whatever reason that had to be given full rights. Since we don't normally have to start the Studio as Administrator I wouldn't think that I'd need to manually change the rights.

I consider this to be a miss from the registration program

shouldn’t it grant the required privileges to the folder/lic file ?

DAW, any thoughts on this? Shouldn't the installation have taken care of setting this user permission?

    Bob,

Not sure why you had this issue - the rights for the folder where the license files are placed should be correct. Is the machine Windows 10? I'm going to set up a fresh instance and test to make sure.

    Bob,

Also, is the user you log into Windows (and then install with) part of the Administrator group?

    Bob,

So I spun up a new VM (Windows 10) that has never had DataFlex installed. There was no Data Access Worldwide folder under ProgramData and of course, no license files. I first tried installing with user Bob, who what not a member of the Administrator group, and as expected, it wanted me to run the installer as Stephen instead. I figured you would have mentioned this if you had to do the same and so I logged out and logged in as Stephen.

I ran the Studio installer and accepted all the defaults. The installation completed and the Studio ran fine under the eval. I checked the rights on ProgramData and see this...

I then used the registration program to enter a real Studio code and all went fine.

Just as an additional test - I created my own folder in ProgramData (not under the data access folder) and looked to see what the standard rights would be for a folder that the installer did not create. You can see from the entire look that it's far different than what the installer did for License Files...

So, it appears that the installers are setting the proper rights for the folders they are creating (License Files and Studio Data). I'm not sure why you got the results you did.
    Best regards,
