Default Attempting to install DataFlex 19.1 Windows Client

    Hi

OK, I'm dumb, but as it happens I've never actually done this before.

I have a system that I have installed on a customer's server and I have migrated their data into SQL Server. All runs OK on the server.

On a workstation I have run the DataFlex 19.1 Client (19.1.58159) and chose a Network Install.

That seems to work, but when I go to run the program (from its location on the server) I get a problem with connecting to the database:
    Code:
    Error: 98

    GET_LOGINCONNECTIDDIALOG (6698) - oConnection (72) - at address 28993
    GET_LOGINCONNECTIDBASE (6697) - oConnection (72) - at address 28984
    GET_LOGINCONNECTIONID (6696) - oConnection (72) - at address 28959
    GET_LOGINALLCONNECTIONS (6704) - oConnection (72) - at address 29067
    MSG_LOGINALL (6719) - oConnection (72) - at address 29346
    MSG_AUTOCONNECT (6509) - oConnection (72) - at address 29360
    MSG_AUTOCONNECT (6509) - oApplication (68) - at address 26425
    MSG_DOOPENWORKSPACE (6508) - oApplication (68) - at address 26418
    MSG_ONCREATE (1397) - oApplication (68) - at address 68770
    MSG_END_CONSTRUCT_OBJECT (459) - oApplication (68) - at address 26443
    [start] - at address 68772
What am I missing? I have installed the Microsoft SQL Server Client on the Workstation (actually several!).

    TIA

    Mike

    fun times.

    1. on the server, in "SQL Server Configuration Manager" make sure tcpip is enabled on the server.
    2. temprarily turn off the firewall on the server, and see if it magically works, if so, turn FW back on, and open a port for MSSQL

    Thanks for that, but...

TCPIP is enabled on the server. SQL Server port 1433 is open in Windows Firewall.

I can't connect to the DB on the server (from the workstation) from ODBC manager (tried 32 & 64 bit versions).

Running out of ideas. (No, that's not true: absolutely run out of ideas, but it's late here so maybe enlightenment will occur in the morning.)

SQL server or SQL Server Express

if express keep in mind express by default is set to run local only

you have to enable networking and set the proper ports

also make sure to use ODBC admin to test the connection. that way you take DF out of the test completely

You might use Database Builder to connect to the database. System Info gives information about the database drivers and the SQL client drivers.

Thanks for that - when I get back in (the customer dosn't like RDP, so I'm having to use Quick Assist through his workstation to connect) I'll give that a look. It is SQL Server Express, so what exactly do I need to do to enable network usage?

I think all the ports are correct - I've allowed port 1433 through the Windows firewall and AFAIK that is what both server and client (only one ATM) are using.

I have been using ODBC admin to test, but no joy so far.

Peter - thanks, useful advice. I'll give that a look. I assume you mean DBBldr from the workstaton? Its fine on the server.

    Hi Mike,

Error 98, invalid message, in this instance implies you don't have a database login dialog included in your source. Perhaps try including the standard package, DatabaseLoginDialog.dg, and see if you can manually enter the credentials.

Although this does sound like it's the workstation having problems connecting to the database engine. When this occurs I usually start by creating a UDL file on the desktop e.g. servertest.udl. Edit the connection tab accordingly and click the Test Connection button. If this fails the problem usually lies with server i.e. firewall, ports, permissions etc. If this passes the problem usually lies with the application i.e. driver, managed connection configuration etc.

It is using Windows authentication, so I'm not sure this applies. Maybe I'm wrong.

I might try the UDL file thing - didn't know about that.

    Mike,

Is your SQL express server configured to allow requests from remote connections?
I vaguely remember there is a setting in Express somewhere.
