Default DataFlex "user count exceeded" error

    Hi,

Now, I haven't seen this one for years - maybe even decades.

Small company with a 5-user DataFlex 19.1 runtime license.

All but one workstation is running DataFlex apps without a problem, although up until yesterday there were no workstations with a problem.

Ok, what do I mean by this? One employee left the company and it was decided to create a new Windows 10 user account on this particular workstation. Setting up DataFlex to run in a new environment is usually simplicity itself - in this case, simply copy the DataFlex HKCU and HKLM registry settings from another properly functioning workstation and apply it to the new Window's user account. The Windows registry looks totally fine. Does anyone have any idea of what might be wrong.

I believe that the problem is looking at me and smiling back, but honestly, everything looks perfect - I'm just not seeing it.

    Regards,

    Hi Rachel -

I bet the new installation is either not finding Termlist.cfg or the DFR (license) file. Check any paths for them. I've never done an "install" that way - so I don't know the ins & outs of it. I just set up the new box/OS & run DataFlex19.1.Workstation.exe (or whatever version).

When copying registry like that ensure both O/S are the same bits. 32/64

    Hi,

    Yes both are 64-bit.

I started out by running DataFlex19.1.Workstation.exe just to give me the basic paths, etc., but received the user count exceeded error. It also looked fine from a registry perspective, but because of the user count exceeded error, that's when I decided to copy the registry from a known functioning workstation, however, this made no difference. All .dfr files and termlist.cfg are in the Bin folder on the server and this folder is absolutely in HKLM DFPath, SystemDFPath, as well as LICENSEDIR.

    Rachael,

For each concurrent user a byte is locked in the user count file (<serialnr>.dfr). When the number of locks to the file is the same as the number of allowed users and a next user attempts to lock a byte you will get this error.

There are a couple of exceptions:
    1. The user does not have rights to lock a byte in the file. For local installations check the rights to the files in the C:\ProgramData\Data Access Worldwide\DataFlex\19.1\License Files folder. For network installations check the location on the network. Don't let an admin say it is correct without double check as this is in majority of the cases the situation.
    2. The OS does not lock 1 byte but multiple (all). You usually see this when only one user can start and no matter how many users you have a license for you get the error.

    Hi Vincent,

What you have mentioned, i.e., rights within the folder (or folder structure) makes perfect sense that this is most probably (read definitely) the problem.

Got curious about that as well. And what would be a solution for it?

    Andrew,

We only know it happens but never found the reason for it.

Note we have also seen the system locking 8-10 bytes instead per attempt.

    Hi Vincent,

Just remembering what I wrote in the topic:

    It could be a clue.
