Were you expecting your direct_input iteration to survive among different instances of your webapp.exe in process pooling mode?

If it works when running from Studio, it means your are hitting a process pooling issue..

I guess you are opening your direct_input device in one webapp request, (which was executed by process "A" in you pool).
and then at a later time, you tried to use that same direct_input "connection" in a different webapp request, but at this time, process "B" is executing this, and it had no valid "direct_input" connected to your arduino device anymore.. the connection was done previouly, by another process .

For this to work you have to perform everything in a single webapp request.. everything.
    Open direct_input.
read whataver you need to read.
    close the direct_input channel

If you cant do this for any other reason.. Webapp is definitely not the right approach.

    Regards
