I think (and I maybe wrong) but it works the same as dropbox i.e. it is a folder on your local machine that has updates copied on a file by file basis to storage on the web. ie the Drive part of the Google Drive name is misleading it's not like a USB stick with a very long cable that you can mount as a drive in windows it is more like FB/instagram etc website that you can upload photos to/retrieve them from

Yes you could edit a photo and re-upload it (google drive is effectively just auto upload changes) but as you can probably see this is never going to work for a file share database

Google Drive really is just an auto file copy service
