    Default Lesson in interface design

Most have heard of the false alarm sent in Hawaii recently. First the official explanation was a "wrong button" was pushed causing the alarm. I knew that was farm animal waste.

I helped design and code the emergency response app used by all the oil majors for emergencies in the Gulf of Mexico, federally mandated after the disaster there in 2010 (Deepwater Horizon). I absolutely knew there was no button. But it appears the interface design of the app used in Hawaii was the real culprit. I am left wondering if there was a confirmation after the selection. I'm betting not.

I read they have changed the label on the pulldown menu item and if they are smart they will add a confirmation like "Are you sure you want to make people run for shelter and cause panic? "
