Hi guys,

I'm about to start developing a new database application.
So far I'm gathering all of the information I can on the requirements and
tools I should use.

I will be using MS-SQL as the database.

Originally I thought I would design it in VDF since I have 4 years VDF
experience, however since talking to a few friends, I'm starting to think
that .NET might be a viable option as well.

If I use .NET, it will be the new .NET 2 framework, which seems to be a lot
better than the old stuff.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the topic?
I do know the development time with VDF will be a lot quicker, but then I
will forever have to count client workstations and pay a fee to Data Access
till the day I or my product dies.

I really want to avoid this, and once I write it in .NET, the application is
mine and I don't have to pay anyone, plus .NET has native support for SQL.

This way I can set a price, and that is the price, end of story. I don't
have to waste time figuring out the confusing client engine licensing
details - and the customers can expand as much as they like without hitting
user limits.

Plus I can add web functionality to my application without buying webapp
licenses.

I now have 12 months ASP.NET experience, and I'm assuming that windows
development will be easier than the web stuff.

My other issue is that if I use VDF, I know for a fact that I can finish the
job, and that the program will be of very high quality, I don't have that
confidence in .NET.

Has anyone done windows development in .NET? how did you find it?
If you could go back and start over, would you still develop your apps in
VDF?

Cheers
Luke
