    But an FD file created by DBB is not UTF8

    It does not need to be in our case and it maybe it would be UTF8 if it needed to be

    It was more to warn you it's not just one buffer, it is many and you need to do the calculations based on number of DD's and buffer records that use that large field

    Also don't forget the 2GB...

    At a guess your source file is still in OEM format so it treated them as OEM characters when it read them and converted them to UTF8 before passing to writeln
