So in the past you could buy an EV code signing certificate and then you could offer an installer as a binary as a download on your website and MS Edge (and other browsers) would let you download that binary and run the installer without any "Microsoft defender has protected you" warnings.

Now try downloading this file:

and try to start the installer (good luck btw, cause it isn't obvious how-to get past the warnings) .. no need to actually proceed with the install, just try to get to the opening screen.. that's already a challenge.

Now this is apparently because Microsoft changed how EV certificates work...

and whatever installations are enough to build a trustable reputation is a black box.

Also note that you can't buy a code signing certificate for more than a year anymore, so this crap will come back to bite you every year if you happen to want to sell software on the interweb. I guess Microsoft wants you to sell your software from their store so they get a cut.
Which I have never ever used, not a single time... (and I sincerely doubt many people buy via the MS Store)

edit: forgot to mention that this all now happens because I just bought a new code signing certificate and I just downloaded my new beta with the new cert and well.. I'm going to sit in a corner somewhere for trying to release new software (bad bad me)
