MK,

I downloaded VDFVCS when you announced it and have played with it single
user, but didn't try multi-user use and VDF12 until now.

I don't know how much testing you were able to do on VDF12 or with network
shares, you refer to vdf1 somewhat obliquely; but I'm having difficulty
getting going.

Specifically if I install vdfvcs on a (mapped) network folder it still seems
to look at c:\DSMA\VDFVCS\ for the repository folder. I've not yet been able
to set up a project so I can't get much further. It's probably my misreading
of the docs, but have you got this working in a network/vdf12 environment?

Hi Dave,
You need to create the initial default repository c:\DSMA\VDFVCS\
REPOSITORY. You should then be able to open the set up dialog and change it
to whatever path you want. You must however, use the F2 key to save the new
path. It will then use that path for all new projects.

We expect to migrate it to VDF12 very shortly, I'll put up the release on
our web site.

Best Regards
Mk

Thanks, got it.

It works pretty well, interface a bit 'busy' at first but in use I see it is
a good compromise as it keeps all the bits together.

I'm on a search for the 'ideal' VCS for us and I've looked at quite a few so
far. short list:
WinCVS
Subversion and various clients for it.
Monotone
CVSNT
Mercurial
and QVCS Pro which I bought a few years ago but we've never really used
because in VDF11.1 and before the source code dependency was all over the
place. DAW packages, 3rd party and our packages all mixed up.
Now we are on VDF12 and 'it's all in the source' I feel a VCS becomes
essential, but we're only two developers so it has to be non-intrusive.

I find the zip files build up pretty quickly, but I'm prpbably checking in
more than I would in 'real world use'.

The only practical reservation I'd have about vdfvcs is the absence of
'labels' to put a meaningful name to a version file, maybe I just missed it.
That probably doesn't matter in a tightly-controlled environment as you've
no doubt got external controls associated with each checked-in revision. We
aren't that organised so I'd like to be able to associate a revision with a
problem report, change request etc. We're a private company who are just
starting to get audits because of recent external investment so ITIL and
change control are big issues (at least for the auditors<g>)

Hi Dave
>>I'd like to be able to associate a revision with a problem report,
After Checking in a workspace, the VCS will create a session file detailing
the files which were revised in that session. You can attach a type eg bug
fix, new release, (you can add your own types) along with some comments To
that session file. See the sessions group. You can also right click in the
type_Field and bring up a dialog showing all the files revised in that
session. You could easily write a report for a particular session/sessions
that would detail the reason for the session and the files that were revised
as a result. If you further use the readonly function and check out each
file / group of files (eg *.tag) it will also reord the amount of time spent
between checkout and check in. This can be a good aid to billing.

If you need a similar function but for each individual file it would be a
simple matter to build that in at that point

Mk
