A new optional section could be added to .sws containing values to be created in the .cfg files generated by the studio, such as copyright, company, icon; and there are several more might be useful. There would also be an update switch which would regenerate the cfg, if set. And also a buildreset switch to set build number back to 1.

We are SDI, so almost 400 .src files. Automation is essential for us.

You could step up your Build Script Game.

In house we developed a "proper" build script that checks out all the source code from GIT, and then edits the config file for each .SRC, so they all have the correct version number, compiles them, signs the Exe and creates an installer.

by running the Build script on a PC which is not (EVER!) used for development, we can ensure that the application as delivered, is actually in GIT so there's no lost source if a developer's laptop decides to go Bye Bye.

I haven't written an actual build script since COBOL on IBM3/70 ...

Great idea. I have actually started a FIXCFG program to apply bulk edits to cfg files, much like the refactoring program(s) do to program sources.
