Hi all,

I play around a bit with VDF developing programs for my own business but I
don't have the time or enough knowledge for this one.

I want a basic invoicing, web application program written using my existing
database structure. I already have a VDF9 version which has been working
fine for many years. I think now is the time to move to a web application to
do the same thing. My workers are mobile technicians out on the road. I'd
like there data to be live and all using the same database rather than
continuously having to sync them up. High speed, affordable mobile internet
access is virtually here so I think the time is right to develop this now.

How do you guys charge - hourly / all up quote? Anyone interested in giving
me some prices /advice.

Alternatively does anyone have any invoice programs they would be willing to
share or any online examples I can check out.

If you interested please email me back with contact ph numbers etc.

while pure web applications have their place IMO the scenario you describe
would call more for a smart client type client.

This concept while not yet directly supported by VDF/Webapp could also be
built using the existing VDF and webapp architecture and could also allow
offline use without having a constant connection to the server all the time.

Also smart clients do not have the limitations you face with a pure web
client

Thanks Marco, Mike and others that emailed me privately.

One private email suggested I maybe look at a different approach -

GoGlobal from www.graphon.com
Check out there online demo at http://www.graphon.com/products/demo.shtml
Works great I think.

Its a remote access program with a difference. It enables you to run from a
(web server only) any installed windows program.

So far I have tested it on some basic Windows programs and it seems very
fast and easy to use. You can even run explorer from a remote and it will
open it in its seperate environment and works great over the internet. I
haven't looked into the security of it yet but amsure it is secure. I
haven't run any VDF programs from it yet either but everything else I have
run works fine. I am pretty sure it will be memory hungry and probably
limited in its concurrent uses but for my use I think it will be perfect.

So thanks everyone for there help, offers etc. If this doesn't work out I
will come running back.
Actually I haven't found out the cost of this yet so that may scare me off
<gr>

Terry

Terry,
after belting GraphOn in a testing environment for a month with 12 users
using all manner of apps,
I found it quite stable, yet vulnerable to any new W2003 patches.
Gotta work with them over which ones they OK.

Yes, it IS a memory & processing consuming little fella, mebbe 40 users on a
2 Xeon 2 gb box will max it out.
On the other hand, this is balanced out by it's excellent local printing
redirection.
No more having to find wierdo printer drivers or substitutions that a user
may have bought last night.

It is an application launcher, that still requires a staunch PDC AD
environment to run in.
And will allow Mac, Linux, Sun & others to run a small exe client or ActiveX
in their browsers for accessing a GraphOn server.

Not bad at all really.
The price per user will certainly polarise any sudden itch to go this way,
hth,
Baz.

Hi Baz,
Great review there.
I have been testing it a little and it seems great too for my needs. Like
you said its probably limited to 40 odd users max. I will have 4-5 max so
for me it should be fine.

What price is the registed licience. I've asked them but they haven't
answered my email yet. Is it charged per client or server?

Regards
Terry
