sure I'm not the first to ask, but will next Halloweeen's release be VDF13 or Visual Dataflex 2008 ala Microsoft?

Or VDF 12 R2
Like crystal.

They have to keep money flowing into the coffers, and leave the guys
that have 10,11,12 behind with no support - so my guess is that around
this time next year we will have VDF14 or 15.

How else do you coax out the ca$h but by having major releases?

C'mon Mark - that really isn't fair. I see just about everyone @ DAW
answering questions here on VDF6 & 7 as well as WebApp2 & character-mode.
Heck, we're getting answers from the guys who wrote the stuff! Would M$ do
anything close to this? Sure - spend $100 to be told you need to upgrade,
that's about it.

I've also never dealt with a product that has as much backwards
compatibility. Isn't that a form of support?

In today's marketplace, a company *has* to continually improve & upgrade to
stay alive. That's what they're doing. Sure, we might have areas we wish
they'd focus on (grids???? ;-), but improvements are improvements.

Off my soapbox now...

If they go the MS route, wouldn't a release in October of 2007 have to be
named VDF 2006? Seems MS runs about a year late, don't they? <g>

13's always been a lucky # for me, so I'd vote for that.

$250 too much for you per year? Maybe you should up your hourly rate. Also
you did know that VDF12 personal is Free. Only when you go to sell your
product and go commercial do you pay.

Just think how M$ works, did you know that the new Studio for Vista will not
be compatable with previous Studio's? Image if DAW did that! I have code
that I wrote way back (too far to remember) that still compiles and works
with VDF11.1?

You might want to re-think the statement you have just made. :-)

If there was some problem with vdf 10 right now and they fix it in vdf
12, does that guy not have to buy vdf12 to get that fix?

Even M$ upgrades their OS for 10 years.....

That is my point, not the fact that they HELP you do things in vdf, that
they don't 'REALLY' maintain their older releases, which are not very old.

I have done this and it costs me $250 per year and I get all the upgrades

Maybe for vanilla VDF.. but what about Webapp, Electos, Client Licenses, and
ConnKits.

I had bought the unlimited Webapp user license as well as the Unlimited
Single-User client license, and Electos, and VDF..... That does come out to
be a lot every year....

Mertech does not charge for ConnKit from version of VDF to another so we go
with them. Much cheaper. You only need a new license when you upgrade to a
new SQL backend.

What exactly do you mean by that? As far as I know, you can still use Visual
Studio 2005 (a GREAT product, BTW) on Vista, but MS recommend that you
install SP1. Vista comes with the .NET Framework 3.0 pre-installed (the
framework currently in use is 2.0), but as 2.0 is a subset of 3.0 you can
still use programs made for 2.0 on 3.0. The other way around can be worse,
of course. (Try to edit and compile a VDF11.1-program with ref-parameters
and multidimensional arrays in VDF9).

As Visual Studio does not use any kind of 'tags' (like '//AB-Start' or
something) I can't imagine that I cannot take my C#-code and use it in both
VS05SP1 or VS code name 'Orcas'.

> Image if DAW did that!

Yes....what a dream it would be ;-) What I use 8-10 lines to do in VDF I can
do with 1 single line in C#, because the syntax is so much better, there's
plenty of functionality in the framework ( I don't have to buy a third party
product every time I want to show a JPG on the screen, there are collection
classes that lets me store whatever I want of objects and put them into a
grid, list, textbox whatever with single line of code, I can parse strings
with regular expressions etc etc etc)

But after all I'm looking forward to try VDF12, as I got the impression that
it's very much like the MS Visual Studio, and that's not a bad thing.

Well, that is another ball of wax.
the patents on these image formats are all but gone, there is no longer
any REAL reason to not have support for .gif, etc in VDF.

It will cost nothing to them other than time to implement.

OK. This patch is now out in Beta. So you can still use VS05 in Vista, but
you cannot use VS.NET (Visual Studio 2003), but who want's to use the 1.1
Framework anyway ;-)

Flamebait!

I love bitter people...

if the product is too expensive, stop using it...if you don't like their
model changes, stop using it....if there's a better tool out there
for less...tell all of us about it!

Notice I didn't say to stop complaining...bitter people can be a very
constructive source of information...

Personally my vote is for a name change entirely....:

Search and Replace "Visual Dataflex 13" with "Flex# v1"
Search and Replace "VDF13" with "Flx#v1"

or maybe we can take the weird name approach:

Search and Replace "Visual Dataflex 13" with "Heffalump 1.0"
Search and Replace "VDF13" with "Hefv1"

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heffalump

Hmm...I think that "origins of creature" section describes VDF^H^H^H
Hefv1 quite well actually:

"He tried counting Heffalumps but every Heffalump that he counted was
making straight for a pot of Pooh's honey" - Sounds like DAW Consulting.

"We learn nothing more about the nature of the beasts" - Sounds about
right...

What do you mean? Please elaborate?
Is this where you sell a product to developers, to compete with them...
but on an unfair playing field?

That is what I heard, at least (from many people...)

Hi

Err... If they skip 13 then they should have already skipped some
numbers and will have to skip other in the future. Different cultures
have different numbers that equate to the western 13.

I suppose it really depends on whether the guys at DAW are still
concerned about the last great 13 in US history... I'm think NASA.

If DAW have started to buy rolls of gaffer tape then we may well get
VDF13<g>

gaffer tape ... I thought they used duct tape. Gaffer tape is MUCH more
expensive, and since everything went to the lowest bidder ...

(BTW: How do you know about gaffer tape? That's normally only used in
theatre. I went through at least 2 rolls of gaffer and 2 rolls of spike
tape in the last few weeks.)

For gaffer read duct, for duct read gaffer, depends what is on special
offer.

The last theatre I went to was an operating theatre, I hope the only
tape they had was surgical tape<g>.

Never heard of spike tape, what's that?

Garret and Oliver,

I'm late on reading that, but you made my day guys. This was very funny.
