I have just recovered my PC from a system crash. I am using XP Pro w/SP3. I have had trouble with all VDF installation not being able to read the Install.log, so when needed to I manually uninstalled, which has worked just find, with the exception of VRW. I had VRW III installed and manually removed it. Tried to install VRW 2009 got the attached error screen, and so I purchased an uninstaller and reinstalled VRW Beta 1 (the only VRW version that would install) in hopes of finding the file/s, that need to be removed. I uninstalled VRW Beta 1 with the uninstaller, no luck. When I tried to reinstall VRW 2009 I got the same error screen. Can anyone tell what file/s the installer is seeing so I can remove them and install VRW 2009. Help:confused::(

Doug,

The installer looks if the runtime engine is registered, this is VRWAPI.OCX. Your registry tells the installer that it is still there. Use a tool like CCCLeaner to get rid of the bad registry (and other) data.

PS: It is Visual Report Writer 2010 not 2009

I'm sorry it's 2010 also.

We prefer "aging hippie" or possibly "refugee from the 60's", if you don't mind! :p

Doug,

The registry entry for VRWAPI.OCX is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{94111974-282F-418E-9907-D17C75425485}. Did you remove that one?

I just look in every directory under that address and there is no VRWAPI.OCX statement. I did manually remove VRWAPI.OCX when I did a Search using VRW. Still will not install

Doug,

Open up regedit, and search for 94111974-282F-418E-9907-D17C75425485
when you find the clsid branch, delete the whole branch, then re try the install.

Michael.

Michael,
That worked I was able to install, BUT I now I get 4 pages of run time errors when I run VRW 2010... this is one of those opportunities to learn, not sure what yet... I may have to download VRW 2010 again, and manually remove VRW 2010 and see if it installs clean. Have to find the download link first.

Doug,

That system crash was more serious than you might think. It looks like your registry is a really in a bad shape. First Visual Report Writer did not want to install because it found traces of a previous install. Now you cleaned up that part you ran into the next one... The installer checks if codejock COM modules (controls, docking panes, command bars) are installed or not and came to the conclusion - based on the registry - they were, so it skipped the installation of that part. The errors indicate it was mislead and thus the COM instantiation fails.

I think you might be better of installing Windows so that you have a good starting point, because it is probably not only Visual Report Writer that will give you problems now and at the short timespan...

Yes, is this the same machine you had problems installing VDF on?

I think you are correct. I have to think about this VDF 15.0 VDF 15.1 are working great... So I can support my clients and I have to take a hard look at WIN 7 if this turns into another complete rebuild

yes it is and the VDF 15.1 problem was that all VDF products can not open the Install.Log strange, other product on my system can.... Yes to suspect a bad XP Pro Install.

Hi Doug -

I'm running 14.1, 15.0, 15.1 & 16 on my Win7 machine & they all get along nicely. IMHO Win 7 is what Vista shoulda been & am very happy with it - with one exception that you'll see a post about in a bit - though it has no effect on you or me - just users.

My final solution will be to install Win 7 and remove XP Pro Sp3 System. I do not have the time to reload XP manually, which is what it would take. I am using Win7 on my Notebook and love it. Your right Garret it is what I had hoped Vista would be. You think Vista was ME based.......:p
