View Full Version : Registering/Unregistering a component

Hi All -

I'm _sure_ this has been brought up before, but I gotta say it anyway.

Registering a component: Makes sense, works OK.

Unregistering: This is the problem - as I've never had to do it before.
I've used DAW products for long enough to know that there's probably a way
to do it - I just have to figure it out. Tried help for "register",
"unregister" & "component". Nothing. Sture to the rescue & thanks for
explaining it Marcos!

Imagine a newbie who doesn't know about Wasp. Is there any way he/she is
going to think to look under "Workspace, Maintain Studio Database"? Even if
he/she did, there's nothing on the view that says anything about
unregistering - it says delete. He or she is going to think there's no way
to do it & probably give up on the product in frustration.

The post Marcos left is from 2000. Isn't this the kind of thing that needs
to be cleaned up? Wouldn't it be fairly simple to add a menu choice & view
to "unregister"? Even easier to change the existing to Register/Unregister.
Not to mention something in Help...

There're just too many idiotsyncrasies like this in VDF....

Thanks - had to vent.

Doesn't the studio selection list for opening a component also have a delete
button? Wouldn't this "unregister" a component?

Hi Bob -

Yes, it does, but.... It also deletes the file! In this instance I was
using Sture's VDFSort.vw & registered the wrong one. I didn't want to
delete it, I simply wanted to register the correct one.

Just seemed to me that the studio would be "cleaner" if there was an
"unregister" option as well as a "register" one.

Hi Garret,

you would have to unregister the component from the abData table by
going to Workspace > Maintain Studio database.. to unregister a
component without deleting the file.

Exactly my point! This strikes me as completely non-intuitive, particularly
for a newer user (who, other than a dummyhead like me, is also the most
likely person to make a mistake in registering).

As I mentioned in the original post, I see 2 main issues:

1) How to "unregister" (or anything about registering) is not in Help
anywhere that I could find

2) Without Wasp (& the NG's) to find an answer, how would a person figure
out that "unregistering" is done the way it is? Even if one does figure out
the Maintain Studio Database concept, the view that comes up says nothing
about what "deleting" does. It simply gives you an option to delete a
record in the studio db. Would someone new to VDF guess that all
"registering" does is create a record in the studio db & that deleting that
record would "unregister" a component?

At the very least, there should be help on 1) registering & what it does &
2) unregistering & how to do it.

The best way (IMHO) would be to have an "unregister" option directly under
the "register" menu choice - or to combine the 2 + help on both.

Regards,

Garret

Agree. A un-register button should be there
