Can anyone point me in the right direction to get detailed information about
setting up Registration and Licensing for my programs when installed by the
end user?

I currently get an error Termlist.cfg not found so I need to find out what I
need to do to sort this.

TIA

Alan,

The easiest is to use the VDFClient.exe to do the installation &
registration of the binaries.

I am trying to do this but I keep getting errors when installing on another
pc (works ok on mine with VDF10.1) the latest is termlist.cfg cannot be
found.
I have read in the VDF support pages that the termlist.cfg holds the
Registered users name and licence key so I need to know how this is
accomplished and also how to set up licence keys.....

Regards

Alan,

Have you read the whitepaper on deploying applications? I think the last
one was VDF 9.1, but its the same for 10.1. I think you'll find all of
your answers there.

The client install will put the termlist.cfg in the /bin directory and
point the registry to that with a temporary registration license that's
valid for 60 days, the register.exe will install the actual license
codes and remove the time limitation.

I have looked at this and see that it does what you say but for the
installation of VDF not for my program.

I keep getting an error to say that 'Termlist.cfg not found'

I need to know about setting up licence codes and registering my program
after the temp licence has been installed. I can find nothing about this in
the white papers...

PMJI, as I don't have an answer on your install, but registering a license
after installing the temp license is:

Start
All Programs
Visual DataFlex 10.1 (or whatever)
Utilities
Register Visual DataFlex

Garret, that is not what I am looking for...

When deploying a program using the Client.exe it sets up an evaluation
licence. What I need to find out is how I get the user to register the
program to remove the evaluation licence

Oops -

I see what you mean now.

When I've done installs, I have the install program run the Client Install
first & when it's done, it offers the user an opportunity to enter a
registration code or just use the demo one. I instruct the user to install
the code I've given him/her & then have the installer copy over my files &
structure.

There's no doubt that the whole client install added to your app install
gets tricky. I (personally) would love to see an entirely different method
used for the client license install, but I guess that's not likely.

Your right about the Client install being rather tricky. I find the
instructions in Help and the White Paper to be very limited when someone is
trying to understand the procedure to deploy a program for the first time.

I for one like to know what is happening and how things work but I am
getting frustrated with trying to understand the correct method for
deploying my first program. There is nothing in the help or white papers
that explains how to deploy correctly to a stand alone computer.

When licensing is such a big issue with DataAccess I would have thought it
to be a priority that information was available to ensure people like me who
are just learning this program would know and understand how to do things
correctly.

I hear your pain <g>.

I tried mine on a spare computer. Took a few tries to get it right. The
big thing I found to be important was running the client install before
doing anything else. In my installer, this was set up as "Perform at Setup
Start".

I had my install put the client.exe in the main app folder & then run it,
then copy over my files. I found the easiest way was to have the install go
into the exact same folder structure as the on the development machine.
This way the workspace is configured correctly.

Alan,

The client install will install a program register.exe, that is what you
use to enter the reg codes for the license and remove the eval license
information.

The white paper tells you where to put the binaries, bitmaps, data &
help files, as well as the registry entries if you want to do it all
manually.

What part are you stuck on, or is it just the register.exe bit?

I have manually run the Client.exe and checked to make sure the registry
files have been installed correctly, then I have run my program install.....
exactly as it says in the help files!!!!

So why an I now getting 2 errors "Can't find lock file" and "User limit
exceeded for this licence" This is my first and only program to try to
install and I just wish DAW would make the information clearer as to what
and how it should be done.

Alan,

Are you sure the user account you are trying to run the program with has
read/write writes to the directory, and the relevant registry sections?

If the .dfr file is there, then that's most likely your problem, which
is not really DAWs, otherwise try deleting the .dfr & register.exe which
will recreate it.

Ian
I have given full access to everyone for the program folder and subfolders.
I have deleted the register.exe from the VDF\Bin folder
There is no .dfr file

I have removed my program again and now I am getting an error to say a .dll
cannot be found but it has been installed by the Client.exe when I ran that
prior to installing my program.

If running the Client.exe first is supposed to install the required files to
run a VDF program why does it not find these files?

Regards Alan

Alan,

If there is no .dfr file then something has gone wrong with the install,
as that is one of the files that is installed - that is the lock file.

Why delete the register.exe, that is what will recreate the .dfr file
for you.

I've used the client install a lot, and never had problems with it not
putting all the files in the correct place, is the client.exe the same
version as you program - there is a different one for every version of VDF.
