Reading through Jim Mulenos "server sizing" thread I just learned that
Pervasive is now up to 8.6 and that's what their engineer recommended to Jim
for best performance.

The first time one of our sites installed 8.2 versus 8.1 they had file
access problems. Version 8.2 introduced the file-level security, i.e. you
have to log-in to the database to access the files.

I haven't had the time to investigate this and I've simply advised customers
to stick with 8.1 for the time being.

Can anyone tell me if there is any specific incompatibility between Dataflex
and versions 8.2 and up? (I' would think not.) Does a move from 8.1 to 8.2
or higher require coding changes? -- such as now you have to introduce a
database login procedure into all of the applications.

Thanks,
Bob

Is there some 'version confusion' in your question?
afaik there's no 8.1, there is 8 sp1 which is versioned as 8.5.
Similarly 8.2 is 8 sp2 and versioned at 8.6.
The Pervasive site has details on the file-level security and I
thought it was optional/not switched on unless you make your file
actually 8.6 style.
I could be wrong. There's (re)construction workers crawling all over
the office and I'm incapable of a train of thought lasting longer than
the pause between hammer drill blasts.

Yes, I misspoke re: version designations (who can keep track -- jack hammer
or not!)

The last time I purchased some workstation engines from DAW for a site
setting up a small network, the product shipped with two CD's in each box,
one labeled 8.1 the other labeled 8.5. The latter had a cautionary label
saying:

"You might be using an application that does not yet support version 8.5.
.... For your convenience, version 8.1 is included in this package on a
separate CD."

Well I had two sites that installed the 8.5 version CD and couldn't run our
apps. They had no problem when using the 8.1 version. I chalked it up to
this file level access security issue that I haven't had time to investigate
and test -- hence my post.

Anyone have any advice that can save me some R&D time?
