View Full Version : Dataflex Ver 3.05 Server Edition

I am hoping that someone will have an answer or help for me. I have been
researching for weeks.
We have been running Dataflex Ver: 3.05 Server Edition. Running Compiled
flx programs.

Under WIN98SE and everything earlier, it runs like a charm. It is
running an ERP 3rd party application.

Not that I have the chance to migrate to WinXP and/or Win2000 Sp4, it
frequently get NTVDM.EXE
errors and bang, back to the desktop. Most of the time I can move about
ok in the programs, but when a
sort is called from the menu, or query is invoked from the menu, they
start, but then when they exit back to
the calling program, Pow, back to the desktop. Often times followed by a
NTVDM.EXE error.

I tried playing around with the environments, changing Autoexec.NT and
Config.NT to increase shell
memory and/or files, but that has not worked. I tried alternating
between using CMD.exe and Command.com
and that does not help. I've tried Full screen window and normal window,
still no good. I have tried
placing all the files involved on the XP computer running in a stand
alone mode, thinking that maybe the network was causing problems and
still no go. I've tried putting all the set and config statements from
the
batch file into the autoexec.NT startup to be there and still no go.

The "Dfrun XXmenu" does run like I stated, but in certain things, pow:
Ntvdm.exe error.

Is there a Fix ? Do I need to use DfrunCon instead ? Does Xp and 2000
see the TSR's as a possible
virus and blow up ? Am I asking too much ?

Please help...

Charlie

Charlie,

What did you set FILES to in config.nt. Have never run the server edition
but have run both DF2.3b and DF3.1d using FILES=250.

Also, not that I think it would be an issue but if the machine has virus
software, you should consider disabling it for *.DAT and *.K* files.
Otherwise, everytime you launch a FLX that opens a data file, the virus
software will scan it. And, if you power failure protection turned on,
which closes & re-opens a file on any SAVE, the file will get rescanned.

HTH,

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your response. This is driving me nuts. Very Nuts. Assorted Nuts.
Salted Nuts.

I do not have virus software running on that PC and I did increase my files in
the config.Nt
to 200. I will increase the files statement to 250 files. Maybe I hit the wall
with 200. When I
try that, I will also review the services that are running (or not running) in
the control panel.
I usually have a habit of turning off as many services as I can to maximize
system performance.

I will post my results.

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie.

Cashews are fine... I've attached a screen shot of the beginning display that
indicates a server edition.
I removed the SN and Company name to post to the internet.

Charlie.

Interesting. Ours says 'multi-user' where yours says 'server edition'
I know that in order to get ours working on XP we had to mess with it a bit.
No idea on your issue tho, sorry.
Thanks for the lesson :)

Awwww Mark.... Please... Help me... Define: "Mess Around With It A Bit"....

If you could tell me what is your version and give me a copy of your Autoexec.NT and
your config.NT, and a copy of your DataFlex startup batch file.... it might help...

I weary of the sport...

Thanks,
Charlie..

Mike,

I increased files and restored those disabled services in the control panel.
Still no good.
Mark reports that they had to "mess around with Xp a Bit" to get it going. I
will take
either Win2000 or WinXp methodology to get dataflex going.

Thanks,
Charlie.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be to much help either except to say I have
run 3.1d & 3.2 extensivly on XP and that works fine. Is it possible for
you to upgrade and recompile to the latest version?

Mark

Charlie,

Check out this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817901#appliesto

Could this be the problem?
It seems like the only time you have a crash is when you try to run another
..exe from within DFRUN.
Solution: Don't run DFSORT or DFQUERY from within your program, run them
from the desktop.

Is there really a DFRUNCON for DataFlex 3.05? I can't find one my system
anyway.

Charlie,

I have the same edition running under XP with no problems. 3.05 Server
Edition. Also running under WIN2K . BUT we are using Sources & Libraries to
build our own runtime (DFRUN.EXE). We did nothing special in the sources
only extended it for using interrupts an printer tests and some more things
like this. The only change I had to make was in config.nt to FILES=250.
Another change was in environment-settings to set DFREREADOPT=1 and
DFPATH=.; . That's all.

regards
Holger

Sure.. here they are.
We do not change anything in any of the .nt files.
So, these are however windows left them when it was installed.

When we went to XP we had printer issues mostly.
We never really had any other issues.
Printers just had to be mapped differently.

We are running only one version of dataflex as well. df31d
We had other odd issues with batch processing but changing them in the
batch files from 'dfrun' to 'dfruncon' solved that. (not that I know why)

Hope this is a little more helpful.

REM where:
REM A specifies the sound blaster's base I/O port
REM I specifies the interrupt request line
REM D specifies the 8-bit DMA channel
REM P specifies the MPU-401 base I/O port
REM T specifies the type of sound blaster card

REM
REM CONFIG.SYS vs CONFIG.NT
REM CONFIG.SYS is not used to initialize the MS-DOS environment.
REM CONFIG.NT is used to initialize the MS-DOS environment unless a
REM different startup file is specified in an application's PIF.
REM
REM ECHOCONFIG
REM By default, no information is displayed when the MS-DOS environment
REM is initialized. To display CONFIG.NT/AUTOEXEC.NT information, add
REM the command echoconfig to CONFIG.NT or other startup file.
REM
REM NTCMDPROMPT
REM When you return to the command prompt from a TSR or while running an
REM MS-DOS-based application, Windows runs COMMAND.COM. This allows the
REM TSR to remain active. To run CMD.EXE, the Windows command prompt,
REM rather than COMMAND.COM, add the command ntcmdprompt to CONFIG.NT or
REM other startup file.
REM
REM DOSONLY
REM By default, you can start any type of application when running
REM COMMAND.COM. If you start an application other than an MS-DOS-based
REM application, any running TSR may be disrupted. To ensure that only
REM MS-DOS-based applications can be started, add the command dosonly to
REM CONFIG.NT or other startup file.
REM
REM EMM
REM You can use EMM command line to configure EMM(Expanded Memory Manager).
REM The syntax is:
REM
REM EMM = [A=AltRegSets] [B=BaseSegment] [RAM]
REM
REM AltRegSets
REM specifies the total Alternative Mapping Register Sets you
REM want the system to support. 1 <= AltRegSets <= 255. The
REM default value is 8.
REM BaseSegment
REM specifies the starting segment address in the Dos conventional
REM memory you want the system to allocate for EMM page frames.
REM The value must be given in Hexdecimal.
REM 0x1000 <= BaseSegment <= 0x4000. The value is rounded down to
REM 16KB boundary. The default value is 0x4000
REM RAM
REM specifies that the system should only allocate 64Kb address
REM space from the Upper Memory Block(UMB) area for EMM page frames
REM and leave the rests(if available) to be used by DOS to support
REM loadhigh and devicehigh commands. The system, by default, would
REM allocate all possible and available UMB for page frames.
REM
REM The EMM size is determined by pif file(either the one associated
REM with your application or _default.pif). If the size from PIF file
REM is zero, EMM will be disabled and the EMM line will be ignored.
REM
dos=high, umb

this may or may not help, but check your PATH environment variable.
I've had DF 3.1 crash horribly if the path variable was longer than
either 128 or 250 chars, I can't remember which, now my SETPATH command
ONLY sets the path to the DF folders and the windows system folders.
