Any one following with interest in the latest developments from Novell.
What does this foretell any exciting synergies as far as Dataflex is
concerned... or is this just a "Hail Mary" pass from Novell...

Eric:
I've been following it. I hope it is not a hail Mary. I really like
the concept of having the ability to choose which kernel I want to use.
What I have been wondering is how licensing for other products will
work. For instance, we are running Pervasive on our Netware 6.5 server.
If we upgrade to OES and choose the Linux kernel, previously that
would have been considered a change in platform and we would have to buy
the Pervasive license for Linux, but what does it mean now? Is
Pervasive going to force me to upgrade to a different platform? If the
vendors go along and don't be idiots and allow us to truly choose which
one fits us best, it should be a very very good thing.

I have not downloaded the eval yet but plan on it in the very near future.

What's your take on it?
Mark

Mark,

The upgrade path for pervasive 9 is changed regarding OS platform. Did not
read all the details. But check it out.

When I heard about 2 or so years ago... I decided to stick with Novell.
I usually do not make radical OS changes until I am ready to change
out the whole server. I don't know if I can make a business case to
upgrade the OS "just because". I would have to come up with some
fundamental business reasons to upgrade any time soon. The server/OS
combination I have now is working VERY well...

Also, we are looking into doing some visual web app work... this may
push me towards Windows Server 2003. I really wish Dataflex would
consider a Apache / PHP version of their web app. Which would work very
well with NOES.

I have always felt that running my backend on Netware made my servers
virtually virus proof... when was the last time you heard of a virus
ravaging Netware... Even so I still antivirus scanners working in the
background running at full force.

Of all the things to like about a NOS besides the reliability, I REALLY
like Netware's print (Non NDPS) services... I would really need to see
how NOES impacts these basic services.

We are pretty much like you it sounds. Why change when Netware is so
stable! I can't say that at all about our windows servers, one of them
was hacked just last weekend.

I've just reinstalled a Netware 6.5 as Netware OES (really SP3 with a
few tweaks), so a sort of halfway point. It's really going to be an
iManager/collaboration sandbox but I'll be doing more over the next
few weeks, and I'm in the PSQL boat as well, so I'll keep in touch.
