View Full Version : Move to RDC?

Leslie L. Brennan

Hi All,

I need advice... Currently my in-house apps were written in VDF 9.0
with Crystal 8.5. Both programs and data reside on a Netware 5.1
Server.

Additionally we run Solomon Accounting ver 6.0 (using MS SQL ver 8.0
and Solomon's OEM version of Crystal 10) on a separate Windows 2000
Server.

Lastly, we have remote users accessing both the VDF Apps and the
Solomon Accounting system through a Citrix Metaframe Server. (The
Solomon Program and Solomon's OEM version of Crystal 10 are also
installed on the Citrix Server.)

I've already converted the VDF apps to 11.1 but am not sure what to do
with the Crystal Reports. I'm concerned that any new Crystal install
or change to the Crystal install on Citrix may adversely affect the
Solomon Crystal Reports and the remote users' ability to print Payroll
Checks, etc.

Will the Crystal 11 Deployment with Merge Modules potentially mess up
my Solomon Crystal 10 settings on the Citrix Server? Should I play it
safe and just move to Crystal 10 with crpe32.dll?

Thanks in advance,
Leslie Brennan

Leslie,

It is possible that your reports will work using the RDC without
upgrading to CRXI. Most basic RDC functions work the same in XI as 10,
however some parts of the RDC were not available in 10 without a $2500
license.

XI Merge Modules will install the DLL's in a different folder than CR10
was installed. This _should_ not be an issue, however I cannot say for
certain because sometimes these things happen.

I would take a report and convert it to RDC to test it with your CR10.
Most of the Prog_ID are version independent but some are not and you may
have to edit those manually (easiest to just subclass the cCrystal to do
this).

David,

Thanks for the reply... I converted one of the reports to use RDC and
it runs fine locally (ie., in-house) , but when I tried to run it over
Citrix, I got "Crystal Report Error. Failed to connect Crystal Report
automation object. The crystal RDC Com runtime components may not be
installed."

Any ideas? Missing dll's?

My Crystal 10 Reports running through crpe32.dll over Citrix run fine.

I run Crystal Reports on Remote Desktop (terminal services) and I don't have
a problem. It may have more to do with permissions and security settings. I
don't think it is a DLL issue..

Does your user have rights to the part of the registry Crystal needs? Does
your user have rights to the directory where Crystal is installed? Is there
an admin login so you can try to run Crystal from that login and see if you
can narrow it down to the group policy.

David,

I don't think its a rights issue because I logged in as myself (with
admin rights) as well as administrator, but neither time could I run
the report.

I think the problem is that while Solomon's OEM version of Crystal is
installed in the normal Crystal Directory structure, Solomon installed
a directory \Solomon\Sol6\Wrkstn\Windows\Crystal which has all of the
Crystal files located there. I'm worried to try too much for fear of
messing up the Solomon access to Crystal, which is very finicky.

I think for now, I'm going to stay with Crystal 10 with crpe32.dll,
until Solomon moves to Crystal 11. then I'll switch to RDC. Thanks for
all your help.

One more thing.

Solomon may be using CRPE to run the reports and not using RDC... so, the
license they used to install CR10 must not be a devlopers license allowing
for unlock of the RDC.

If you have a Developer license, you can add your license and try it again.
I agree, you should not change or mess with the install. I am not sure if
Solomon used the Merge modules to do the install to the location you said.

Even if Solomon goes to XI, it is likely they will attempt the same type of
install... and there is no telling if they will move to using RDC... and
they will probably put the files in the same location they have them now...
So you will still have the same issue.

David,

I talked to our Solomon consultant and she said Solomon uses a
combination of CRPE and RDC. But she said their implementation through
their menuing system is verrrry picky.

Solomon's OEM version of Crystal is CR Professional, Product Type
Full. I do have the Developer's version of Crystal 10, so I tried just
adding the license through License Manager, but still no luck. :(

Leslie

p.s. Thanks again for ALL your help.

PMJI - but I've had experience with Solomon.

I can attest to that! A better description might be "Don't let any other CR
file get within 3 computers of a Solomon installation"

About 5 years ago, I attempted to get some of my CR 8 & 8.5 reports (that
reported on a SQL database totally unconnected to Solomon)to co-exist
peacefully with Solomon & spent 30+ hours before giving up. The Solomon rep
(+ Solomon's tech. support) for that client said that "Solomon would not
support their product if they found that a Solomon user had access to any
non-Solomon Crystal Reports". They went on to say that "the user should use
someone else's computer to run other Crystal reports".

Not precisely real-world thinking, but it makes me say that if you've got
something working now, I wouldn't mess with it.

My 2 cents...

Garrett,

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I haven't come across anyone with
the Solomon experience here.

I've been playing with this on and off for the past few weeks, and at
one point actually messed up the Solomon install so reports would not
run. Aaaaaaghh. Luckily, it wasn't a payroll check-printing day and I
just had to re-register some of Solomon's Crystal dll's.

It's sooo confusing keeping Solomon, Citrix, VDF, Crystal and Netware
all running smoothly. Keeping them current seems to be a nightmare.. I
guess for now I'll just have to be content with VDF 11 with Crystal 10
(crpe32.dll). That combination seems to work fine over Citrix. Maybe
one day I'll be able to add a 2nd Citrix Server for all of the
non-Solomon apps so I can move to Crystal 11 with RDC.
