View Full Version : Interrupted Report

I have a customer running VDF7 with Crystal 8.0. When they print one
report, which is probably the longest report they print (about 18
pages), Crystal will not print the entire report (all other reports
print correctly). It stops at least 4 pages short and sometimes more.
They have tried printing from both workstations on the network with
different printers with the same results. When I download their data to
my computer I have no problem printing the entire report! Anyone have
any ideas?

What database are you using? How do you know it is stopping short? Do you
mean it shows "Page 1 of 18" and only prints up to "Page 13 of 18"? Or does
it just not print the new data?

Dataflex Database. The customer knows it is not printing all pages
because some of the information that should be on the report is not
there and also when I print the report using their data I get the
complete report.

Can you check the version of the CRPE and the P2BDFAPI files to make sure
they are the same version?

Hi Sam,
Can you flick the "use indexes for speed" off and see what happens?

Yes, but why would it work correctly on my computer?

Thanks,

Hi Sam,
You could have a situation where you have exceeded max records on the index.
Peter
This works differently on different computers depending on ? when this
situation occurs.
Have you tried the setting to see if it's an index problem?

I will check this out although I do not think this is the case.

It has always been possible to exceed the maximum number of records set on a
table. The name could have been chosen better. A better name would have been
"Allow at least this number of records". Exceeding the max number of records
works exactly the same on all platforms and computers! See the VDF11
documentation of DF_FILE_MAX_RECORDS that exalins why it works this way and
also shows how to calculate the "real" maximum.

There is plenty of room left in the file. The file is set for 500,000
records and there are only about 160,000 records in the file.

Hi Sam,
Where you have a difficult problem like guessing a number between 1 and 100,
the best thing to do is to pick a first guess (48 according to Carl
Sagan/Astronomer).

Therefore, my suggestion was basically that you remove the possiblity of
index trouble from the equation. Make sense at all?
This type of debugging has worked well for me.

PS: You could always just dial up David Martinko after DISD and he can
probably solve it with about 1/2 hour billing rather than you spending hours
at it. PS: David has just joined the NEDC!

Thanks Peter. I have just sent a modified report to the customer
removing the use of indexes for speed to test it.
