Thanks for all your help and sticking with this.

The parameter on my machine is in two places but only one seems to be in use. That's in c:\program files (x86)\VDF16.1\Pkg\language_DD_English.inc. I changed this to "" (from <undefined>) and after a precompile of the system packages it now works correctly (in my view!).

The .inc file is read only so this needs changing before being modified. If something other than <undefined> or "" is needed - for example <bl> for blank - that too will work.
