Conversion to Stored Procedures

I believe VRW 3.0 is maturing into a product worthy of purchase and I have made up my mind to start converting reports ready for purchase when released.
The main thing that is missing is the ability to email directly from within VRW rather than the VDF code. Not huge but it would be nice.

I tried creating some simple stored procedure reports and they all worked fine other than i have some minor understanding points.

1. Using an RDS example as a base whereby a had a category table with category code and description and a second table for account codes that had an Account Code, Description and category code. The two RDS tables were linked and grouped by category code. I could not see how to have multiple result sets to achieve something similar. I can report with one result sets with repetitive category into for each account is not very efficient or normalised. Is there a simple way using stored procedures to achieve what i want.

2. I had a number of RDS test reports in v 2.1. and i tried changing the database source to stored procedures. The wizard all works fine up to the point that it wants to map the existing rds tables to the stored procedure. I could not see how to latch onto the stored procedure at that point. Is it possible to convert from RDS to stored procedure ODBC and if so does multiple RDS tables present a problem.

It would be fair to say i am feeling my way with Stored Procedures.

Why are the common key combinations in VDF not existant in VRW?

I'm thinking of Cntrl + S etc.

Plus nudge would be nice. It's not a key combination but it annoys me.

It's REALLY annoying having those missing... well to me anyway.

Embed fonts option in VRW 2.1 Export to PDF

I have barcodes, and some odd fonts in my report, and when I email copies of the pdf to customers, the barcodes don't always print. This is usually handled in PDF by forcing the option to embed the fonts. Can I turn this on in VRW2.1? if so, how?

Stored procedure example

I wonder if there is one?If not could I suggest a simple blog entry showing order entry invoices grouped by customer.At the last DDUG it was a question that was asked that seemed to be a sticking point whereby a lack of known example prevented migration from "that other" widely used report generator.BTW good vrw blogs recently. They are very helpful.

Error 4200 Incorrect Syntax in ')

I'm running a report against the database from a client on MSSQL10. The database contains 4962 tables (don't ask me why.....)

Creating a report i getting an error message 4200 'Incorrect syntax'

I did not code anything.... just used the database-expert.

PS With this numbers of files the opening time is unworkably slow (open en re-opening again and again because of being modeldialog). YAFR. Make it non-model so that can be switched between design, preview and database-expert

PSFunction - Not Changing

Alpha II
In an experimental RDS VRW report i have a function named "Report Header" with the value Return 'Report Header Test'

In the VrwReport section i have a procedure to get and set function values.

Get PSFunction "Report Header" result = 'Report Header Starting Value'
Set PSFunction "Report Header" "Return 'Report Header Client name'"
Get PSFunction "Report Header" result = 'Report Header Client name'

All looks well at this point.

But when report continues and is shown in previewer the "Report Header" function displays as "Report Header Starting Value"

I traced psFunction ad it processes without any errors.
The same experimental report in 2.1 displayed 'Report Header Client name'

This happens to any function i attempt to update via psFunction.

Hi DAW,

Created a small report with VRW based on a workspace with MSSQL (MSSQL2008R2 Express/32).
Attached an overview Attachment 6503
The report runs perfectly in VRW

When attached to an app and run the application i get the below messages

Q1: Where does this problem come from (it is the only reports in the app). Is it a bug?
Q2: Is there documentation available on error messages?

What I expect when I run a report using this class is that the database connection will be changed to what I defined it as in ChangeODBCDataSource. It works great on my development machine. However when I do a test deployment, I get an error saying that the user does not have select permission on the tables (the user does, I checked). So I did a test. On my development machine I modified the ChangeODBCDataSource Procedure to:

I am thinking that I should get a select permission denied error since the user shouldfail does not have access to my database. Yet, it works. It seems like the connection string is not really getting set. What am I doing wrong?

I actually use that in some reports to determine if something should be printed or not.

VRW 3.0 Alpha II issues

Hi Guys

I've found some issues with the new VRW 3.0.0.9313 Alpha II;

1. The Section option 'Print at bottom of page' does not work

2. Print dialog from preview, click on Page Range; Current page: The cursor goes in a spin and will only come back to normal when activated another windows program, then clicking back in the printer dialog.

3. Export to PDF: I have a nice report A4, two pages per record (double sided letter style), 240 pages. All looks good on screen and printing (A4). The produced PDF however is 8.27 x 11.69 which is fine I think, but the content is halved in size (could this be due to the two pages per record?!?)

4. When pasting text (eg from notepad) into a Text object, weird focus handling is happening (should be really easy to reproduce)

5. I added in the New report wizard, only one field. Then using the field explorer i added many more. When I then used the Filter Expert, only the one field was offered as a report field.

6. I had a Filter expert and a Filter function. I thought they would complement each other, but if there is a filter in the expert, it completely ignores the filter function.

frequent crashes

Been working with VRW on my home and work machines for well over a week.
Using 2.1 and 3.0 alpha

These apps are crashy.
I can get 2.1 to crash just my moving fields on the report at times.
All I get is the logged event with the following and another event saying that it's uploaded the data to microsoft to check for a solution.
Work machine: Windows 7 pro
Home: Windows 7 ultimate
Both are 64 bit and both crash in very similar ways... and its seemingly random.
I have lost a few reports to this so it's kinda annoying now.

What to do?
